Who Is the REAL Villain of My Best Friend’s Wedding?
Hello everyone! How are you all doing?
Before we get into today’s topic, I just want to take a moment to thank you all for catching up with me Weekly.
Now, let’s talk about one of my all-time favorite movies—My Best Friend’s Wedding.
Why This Movie Means So Much to Me
When I was a little girl, romantic comedies were something my father and I bonded over. My mom loved African movies, but my dad and I? We were all about American rom-coms. We’d sit together, watch, laugh, and break down every scene.
My Best Friend’s Wedding was one of our shared favorites. It’s not just because Julia Roberts gave a stellar performance (which she absolutely did), but because of the sheer level of desperation she allowed herself to indulge in for the sake of love. Watching it as a child, I thought it was just a fun, chaotic love story. But as an adult? I see the deeper layers—and I have to ask:
Who was the REAL villain of this movie?
Because the more I think about it, the more I realize—everyone in this movie was playing a game.
Was Julianne Really the Villain?
The easy answer is yes. Julianne was manipulative. She lied, schemed, and did everything in her power to sabotage Michael and Kimmy’s wedding. But was she the only one guilty of manipulation?
Let’s break it down.
Michael Played Both Women
Michael was not some innocent victim caught between two women. If he was so committed to Kimmy, why was he constantly crossing boundaries with Julianne?
• He flirted way too much for an engaged man. That moment when he walked in on Julianne half-dressed and told her she looked good? Huge red flag.
• He got too close to kissing Julianne—not once, but twice.
• When Julianne pretended to have a boyfriend (shoutout to George, the true MVP of this film), Michael got jealous. He suddenly wanted more alone time with her.
• And then there was the boat scene. He literally takes Julianne on a romantic ride during his wedding weekend just to repeat Kimmy’s words: “If you love someone, you should say it before the moment passes you by.” Sir, why would you say that to your ex unless you wanted her to confess something?
Michael never actually rejected Julianne. He kept her emotionally close, stringing her along while still planning to marry Kimmy. He knew Julianne had feelings for him, and he didn’t shut it down—he encouraged it.
Michael wasn’t a confused man in love. He was enjoying the attention from both women.
Kimmy Wasn’t as Innocent as She Seemed
Kimmy is often seen as the sweet, innocent fiancée who got blindsided by Julianne’s schemes. But let’s be real—Kimmy knew Julianne was a threat from the start.
• She admitted that Michael idolized Julianne and saw her as “perfect.” That alone tells us she knew Michael’s heart wasn’t 100% hers.
• Instead of questioning why her fiancé was so emotionally attached to another woman, she focused all her frustration on Julianne.
• And let’s not forget—after everything Julianne did, Kimmy still allowed her to be the maid of honor. Why? Because she wasn’t just trying to win Michael’s love; she was trying to prove she was the better choice.
Kimmy didn’t just win Michael. She secured him. And those are two very different things.
The Narrative Ignored Everyone Else’s Manipulation
The movie focuses so much on Julianne’s actions that it completely ignores the fact that everyone was playing a role in this mess.
• Michael emotionally led Julianne on.
• Kimmy ignored her own doubts and instead put Julianne in her place instead of confronting Michael.
• Julianne was blatantly manipulative.
But at the end of the movie, only Julianne gets held accountable. Michael gets off scot-free, and Kimmy gets her fairytale ending.
But is it really a fairytale when your husband’s heart was so close to belonging to someone else?
Who Was the Real Villain?
Who Was the Real Villain?
The truth is—everyone was the villain in My Best Friend’s Wedding.
Michael was selfish and emotionally manipulative. Kimmy was naïve but strategic in securing her place. And Julianne? Well, her desperation for love drove her to betray a friend and lose her own dignity.
So, I leave you with this question:
Was Julianne the true villain, or was Michael just as bad—if not worse?
