Hey, Let’s Get to Know Each Other!

Hello, my dearest readers,

I think it’s important that we get acquainted because my plan is to check in with you every week. I hope that’s OK with you! More than anything, I want you to know that I truly care.

The difference between me and a lot of people? I’m gonna tell you the real. Not a polished-up version, not what I think you want to hear, but the truth—the way I see it. So, if you’re looking for someone who’s going to sugarcoat life, this ain’t it.

Now, hopefully, you feel like I feel, and we’re able to connect. But maybe you won’t—and that’s OK too. Either way, I’m here to be 100% myself.

The crazy part? I’m out here asking people to get to know me while I’m still figuring myself out. Can you believe that? But hey, isn’t that life?

Single Mom, College Student, & Just Trying to Make It

Right now, here’s where I’m at:

• I’m a single mom to an amazing 9-year-old daughter

• I’m currently in school for my bachelor’s degree

• I’m trying to build a future, make my African mom proud, and prove to myself that I can reach goals everyone says are “too big”

Sounds like a lot, right? Because it is.

On top of that, I’ve been in a relationship for about two… maybe three years? Depends on who you ask.

• If you ask him? Probably two years—hell, maybe even one.

• If you ask me? Three years and counting.

Meanwhile, I’m 5’2”, honey chocolate, fire Sagittarius, and always on the move. I feel like Robin from Waiting to Exhale—a little naïve, a little optimistic, but definitely not in love with nobody’s man.

But just like Robin, I’m also lost. Where I’m at, who I’m supposed to be with, what my next step is—it’s all just rolling downhill like a snowball, and I have no idea when it’s gonna stop.

The Career Struggle Is Real

Right now, I have a part-time job as a PCA. And let me tell you—it don’t pay nothing.

And I know what you’re thinking:

“Mo, why don’t you just get another job?”

I wish it was that simple! But I’m supposed to start a Social Work internship this summer. If I take on a new job now, I’ll probably have to quit or put it on hold when my internship starts.

So now I’m stuck wondering—how am I gonna make money in the meantime? I don’t know.

Mom Life: The Guilt, The Love, The Pressure

Last week, I took my daughter to Boba—this cute little spot that sells slushy drinks with these little popping balls at the bottom. I had mango, she had strawberry, and it was delicious.

My baby is 9 years old, and she’s so pretty—chocolate like her mom. And if you ask me, I think I’m doing a wonderful job raising her.

But that’s only if you ask me.

• If you ask my mom? I’m not doing enough for her.

• If you ask my boyfriend? I need to be tougher with her.

• If you ask her dad? I just need to let him be around more.

Everybody got opinions. Everybody.

But I think I’m so gentle with her because deep down, I’m trying to make up for picking the wrong father for her.

See, kids don’t get to pick their parents. And I blame myself for making that choice. I try to make up for it every single day. And sometimes, I don’t just feel like I’m not good enough for her—I feel like I’m not good enough for me.

So, What’s Next?

I think that’s enough for my first post. But trust me, there’s so much more to come.
